But the angel said to him, “Zechariah, don’t be afraid. Your prayer has been heard by God. Your wife, Elizabeth, will give birth to a baby boy. You must name him John.


By that time the following year, Hannah had become pregnant and had a son. Hannah named her son Samuel. [11] She said, “His name is Samuel because I asked the Lord for him.”


Then the Lord said, “I have seen the troubles my people have suffered in Egypt. And I have heard their cries when the Egyptians hurt them. I know about their pain.


Then God heard Rachel’s prayer. God made it possible for Rachel to have children.


Rachel said, “God has listened to my prayer. He decided to give me a son.” So Rachel named this son Dan. [171]


Jacob came in from the fields that night. Leah saw him and went out to meet him. She said, “You will sleep with me tonight. I have paid for you with my son’s flowers.” So Jacob slept with Leah that night.


Leah said, “God has given me a reward because I gave my slave to my husband.” So Leah named her son Issachar. [176]
