16-18 Abraham understood that Ephron was telling him the price of the land. [130] So Abraham paid him for the land. Abraham weighed 10 pounds [131] of silver for Ephron and gave it to the merchant. [132]

Then I said, “If you want to pay me, then pay me. If not, then don’t!” So they paid me 30 pieces of silver.


I bought the field at Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel. I weighed out 17 shekels {\cf2\super [266]} of silver for him.


None of you should do wrong to your brother \{in Christ\} or cheat him in this way. The Lord will punish people that do those things. We have already told you and warned you about that.


Brothers and sisters, continue to think about the things that are good and worthy of praise. Think about the things that are true and honorable and right and pure and beautiful and respected.


Don’t owe people anything. But you will always owe love to each other. The person that loves other people has obeyed all the law. {\cf2\super [135]}

A shekel {\cf2\super [435]} must equal 20 gerahs. A mina must equal 60 shekels. It must be equal to 20 shekels plus 25 shekels plus 15 shekels.


You can’t buy wisdom\par with even the purest gold.\par There isn’t enough silver in the world\par to buy wisdom.\par


Every person who is counted must pay 1Ú2 shekel. (That is 1Ú2 shekel by the official measure. [299] This shekel weighs 20 gerahs. [300])This half shekel is an offering to the Lord.


“Sir, listen to me. 10 pounds [129] of silver means nothing to you and me! Take the land, and bury your dead wife.”


Later their bodies were moved to Shechem. They were put in a grave there. (It was the same grave that Abraham had bought in Shechem from the sons of Hamor. He paid them with silver.)


Then Israel gave them a command. He said, “When I die, I want to be with my people. I want to be buried with my ancestors [261] in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite.


They carried his body to Canaan and buried it in the cave at Machpelah. This was the cave near Mamre in the field that Abraham bought from Ephron the Hittite. Abraham bought that cave to use as a burial place.


At the end of every year, Absalom cut the hair from his head and weighed it. The hair weighed about five pounds. [79]


I signed the deed. {\cf2\super [267]} And I had a copy of the deed sealed up. {\cf2\super [268]} And I got some men to witness the things I had done. And I weighed out the silver on the scales.


But the king said to Araunah, “No! I tell you the truth, I will pay you for the land. I will not offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God that cost me nothing.”
