I know you are very stubborn. I know you want to live your own way. Look, you refused to obey the Lord while I was with you. So I know you will refuse to obey him after I die.


\{Then Stephen said,\} “You stubborn Jewish leaders! You have not given your hearts to God! You won’t listen to him! You are always against what the Holy Spirit {\cf2\super [147]} is trying to tell you. Your ancestors did this, and you are just like them!


Aaron answered, “Don’t be angry, sir. You know that these people are always ready to do wrong.


So don’t turn against the Lord! Don’t be afraid of the people in that land. We can defeat them. They have no protection, nothing to keep them safe. But we have the Lord with us. So don’t be afraid!”


Then the Lord said to Moses, “Put Aaron’s walking stick {back into the Tent} in front of the Agreement. [228] This will be a warning for these people who are always turning against me. This will stop their complaining against me, so that I won’t destroy them.”


God saw no wrong in Jacob’s people. God saw no sin in the people of Israel. The Lord is their God, and he is with them. The Great King is with them!


“The Lord your God will force those nations out for you. But don’t say to yourselves, ‘The Lord brought us to live in this land because we are such good people!’ {That is not the reason!} The Lord forced those nations out because they were evil—{not because you were good}.


If the people teach their God’s commands\par to their children,\par then the children will not be like\par their ancestors. {\cf2\super [444]} \par Their ancestors turned against God.\par They refused to obey him.\par Those people were stubborn.\par They were not loyal to God’s Spirit.\par


“But even then,\par you didnt listen to me!\par You didn‘t learn anything!\par You refused to listen to anything\par I told you.\par I have known since the beginning\par that you would be against me.\par You have rebelled against me\par from the time you were born.\par


And now you are doing the same thing that your fathers did. You sinful people, do you want the Lord to be even more angry against his people?


The enemy has surrounded Jerusalem\par like men guarding a field.\par Judah, you turned against me!\par So the enemy is coming against you!”\par This message is from the Lord.\par


But they turned against me and refused to listen to me. They did not throw away their horrible idols. They did not leave their filthy statues in Egypt. So I (God) decided to destroy them in Egypt—to let them feel the full force of my anger.
