“I stayed on the mountain 40 days and 40 nights, like the first time. The Lord also listened to me at that time. The Lord decided not to destroy you.


Moses and Aaron were some of his priests.\par And Samuel was one of the men\par who called on his name.\par They prayed to the Lord,\par and he answered them.\par


Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will do what you ask. I will do this because I am pleased with you and because I know you very well.” [335]


So the Lord felt sorry {for the people}. The Lord did not do the thing that he said he might do—he did not destroy the people.


God wanted to destroy those people.\par But Moses, the man he chose,\par stopped him.\par God was very angry,\par but Moses blocked the way,\par so God did not destroy the people. {\cf2\super [558]} \par


You made the Lord angry at Mount Horeb (Sinai). The Lord was angry enough to destroy you!


The things those people saw were so terrible that Moses said, “I am shaking with fear.” {\cf2\super [163]} {\cf2\super [164]}


Then the Lord said, “I am making this agreement with all of your people. I will do amazing things that have never before been done for any other nation on earth. The people with you will see that I, the Lord, am very great. The people will see the wonderful things that I will do for you.


The Lord was very angry with Aaron—enough to destroy him! So I also prayed for Aaron at that time.


If you do that, then the Lord will become very angry at you. He will shut the skies, and there will be no rain. The land will not make a harvest. And you will soon die in the good land that the Lord is giving you.


God heard this and became very angry.\par And He rejected Israel completely!\par


So the people cried to Moses for help. Moses prayed to the Lord and the fire stopped burning.


Those people made a golden calf\par at Mount Horeb.\par They worshiped a statue!\par
