Deuteronomy 23:21 - Easy To Read Version

21 “When you make a promise to the Lord your God, don’t be slow to pay all that you promised. Why? Because the Lord your God will demand that you pay it. You will sin if you don’t pay the things you promised.

I will give the Lord the things I promised.\par I will go in front of all his people now.\par


People, you made promises\par to the Lord your God.\par Now, give him what you promised.\par People in every place\par fear and respect God.\par And they will bring gifts to him.\par


The money earned by a man [146] or woman prostitute must not be brought to the special house of the Lord your God. A person can’t use that money to pay for the things he promised to give to God. Why? Because the Lord your God hates for people to sell their bodies for sexual sin.


“You have heard that it was said to our people long ago, ‘When you make a vow {\cf2\super [68]} (promise), don’t break that promise. Keep the vows (promises) that you make to the Lord.’ {\cf2\super [69]}


When the men saw this, they began to fear and respect the Lord. The men offered a sacrifice {\cf2\super [7]} and made special promises to the Lord.


God, I made special promises to you.\par And I will do what I promised.\par I will give you my thank offering.\par


Then Jacob made a promise. He said, “If God will be with me, and if God will protect me on this trip, and if God gives me food to eat and clothes to wear,


Judah, look!\par Look there, coming over the mountains.\par Here comes a messenger\par bringing good news!\par He says there is peace!\par Judah, celebrate your special holidays.\par Judah, do the things you promised.\par Those worthless people\par will not come through\par and attack you again!\par Why? Because all those bad people\par have been destroyed!\par


Salvation comes only from the Lord!\par “Lord, I will give sacrifices to you,\par and I will praise and thank you.\par I will make special promises to you,\par and I will do the things I promise.”\par


If you don’t make a promise, then you are not sinning.


If at that time Jonathan’s family must be separated from David, then let it happen. May the Lord punish David’s enemies.”


You will pray to him,\par and he will hear you.\par And you will be able to do the things\par you promised to do.\par


So bring your thank offerings {\cf2\super [301]} \par \{to share with the other worshipers\}\par and come to be with God.\par You made promises to God Most High,\par so give him the things you promised.\par


And I will praise your name forever.\par Every day, I will do the things I promised.\par


And I will be very angry. I will kill you with a sword. Then your wives will become widows. And your children will become orphans.


This food is for the Levites, [94] because they don’t have any land of their own. This food is also for other people in your towns that need it. That food is for foreigners, widows, and children that have no parents. If you do this, then the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.


You may require a foreigner to pay you back. But you must cancel any debt another Israelite owes you.


If that person gives money to someone,\par he will not charge interest on that loan.\par And that person will not take money\par to do bad things to innocent people.\par If a person lives like that good man,\par then he will always be near God. {\cf2\super [82]} \par


If a person wants to borrow money, the good man lends him the money. And he does not charge interest on that loan. The good man refuses to be crooked. He is always fair with every person. People can trust him.
