David also defeated the people of Moab. At that time he forced them to lie on the ground. Then he used a rope to separate them into rows. Two rows of men were killed, but the whole third row was allowed to live. In that way, the people of Moab became servants of David. They paid tribute [53] to him.
The Lord says these things: “I will definitely punish \{the people of\} Ammon {\cf2\super [25]} for the many crimes they did. {\cf2\super [26]} Why? Because they killed the pregnant women in Gilead. {\cf2\super [27]} The Ammonite people did this so they could \{take that land\} and make their country larger.
