2 Kings 17:34 - Easy To Read Version

34 Even today those people live like they did in the past. They do not honor the Lord. They do not obey the rules and commands of the Israelites. They do not obey the Law or the commands that the Lord gave to the children of Jacob (Israel).

God said to Jacob, “Your name is Jacob. But I will change that name. You will not be called Jacob now. Your new name will be Israel. [207] ” So God named him Israel.


Then the man said, “Your name will not be Jacob. Your name will now be Israel. [191] I give you this name because you have fought with God and with men, and you have not been defeated.”


The Lord says,\par “Family of Jacob, listen to me!\par You people call yourself ‘Israel.’\par You are from Judah’s family.\par You use the Lord’s name to make promises.\par You praise the God of Israel.\par But you are not honest and sincere\par when you do these things.”\par


They respected the Lord, but they also served their own gods. Those people served their gods the same as they did in the countries they were taken from.


When these people began to live in Samaria, they did not honor the Lord. So the Lord sent lions to attack them. These lions killed some of those people.


Elijah found twelve stones. There was one stone for each of the twelve family groups. These twelve family groups were named for the twelve sons of Jacob. Jacob was the man that the Lord had called Israel.


Now you want me to go and tell him that you are here?


Then Ahijah said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces of this coat for yourself. The Lord the God of Israel says: ‘I will tear the kingdom away from Solomon, and I will give you ten of the family groups.


Jacob built an altar there to worship God. Jacob named the place “El, the God of Israel.”


Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.”


But the Israelites did not listen. They kept on doing the same things they did before.


My enemies will not change their lives. {\cf2\super [331]} \par They don’t fear and respect God.\par


The person who lives right respects the Lord. But the person who is not honest hates the Lord.
