9 Truly in our own hearts we believed that we would die. But this happened so that we would not trust in ourselves. It happened so that we would trust in God, who raises people from death.

I don’t mean that we are able to say that we can do anything \{good\} ourselves. It is God who makes us able to do all that we do.


Abraham believed that God could raise people from death. And really, \{when God stopped Abraham from killing Isaac,\} it was like Abraham got Isaac back from death.


We have this treasure \{from God\}. But we are only like clay jars that hold the treasure. This shows that this great power is from God, not from us.


Job, if you can do all these things,\par then even I will praise you.\par And I will admit that you are able\par to save yourself with your own power.\par


There were some people that thought that they were very good. These people acted like they were better than other people. Jesus used this story to teach them:


Cut the wool from your lambs and make your clothes. Sell some of your goats and buy some land.


“Maybe I will tell a good person that he will live. But maybe that good person will begin to think that the good things he did in the past will save him. So he might begin to do bad things. But I won’t remember the good things he did in the past! No, he will die because of the bad things he begins to do.


Strong, healthy people have eaten\par and bowed down before God.\par In fact, all people,\par those who will die\par and those who are already dead,\par will bow down before God!\par


During times of trouble, evil people are defeated. But good people win a victory even during death.


I told myself I would live to be old.\par But then it was my time to go through\par the gates of Sheol. {\cf2\super [365]} \par Now I will spend all of my time there.\par


Like it is written in the Scriptures {\cf2\super [71]} :


Brothers and sisters, we want you to know about the trouble we suffered in the country of Asia. {\cf2\super [2]} We had great burdens there. The burdens were greater than our own strength. We even gave up hope for life.


God saved us from these great dangers of death. And God will continue to save us. We have put our hope in him, and he will continue to save us.
