But if you call yourselves “Jews,” and [claim to] rely on the Law of Moses, and brag about [belonging to] God;

the Israelites. These people are God’s adopted children; they have [experienced] His glorious presence; they have [received] His Agreements; they have been given the Law of Moses; they possess the [Temple] service and the promises [of God].

Much in every way! First of all, the Jews were entrusted with the messages of God [i.e., their prophets received divine revelations].

“Do not think that I will accuse you [of wrongdoing] before the Father; Moses, on whom you have set your hope [i.e., you base your acceptance with God on the promises found in Moses’ writings], he is the one who accuses you [i.e., in his writings].

The Pharisee stood up [conspicuously] and prayed about himself this way [i.e., bragging to God about how good he was], ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, sexually unfaithful to their mates, or even like that tax collector [over there].
