34 Then Jesus left [His place of seclusion] and, seeing the large crowd, He felt deep compassion for them because they were [as disoriented] as sheep without a shepherd, so He began teaching them.

But when He saw the large crowds He felt compassion for them because they were distressed and disoriented like sheep without a shepherd.


But the crowds found out about it [i.e., where Jesus had gone], so they followed Him [there]. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the [coming] kingdom of God and cured those who needed healing.


For we do not have a head priest who is incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but One [i.e., Jesus] who has been tempted in every way that we have, and yet without sinning.


When Jesus came out [of His place of seclusion] and saw a large crowd, He felt a deep compassion for them and healed their sick people.


So, for this reason, He had to become like His brothers in every way [i.e., except that He never sinned], so that He could become a merciful and faithful Head Priest in things related to God’s [service], [and] that He could provide a means of purifying [Lev. 16:30] for people’s sins [i.e., a “covering over” or forgiveness of them].


Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “I feel deeply moved over this crowd, because they have continued listening to me for three days now, and have nothing [left] to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry because they will become weak along the way.”


But the people saw them going and, since many recognized them, these people ran on ahead of them from all the [surrounding] towns.


And when the day was nearly over His disciples came to Him and said, “This place is deserted and the day is almost over;


In those days, when a large crowd again assembled [i.e., to listen to Jesus’ teaching] and did not have anything to eat, Jesus called His disciples and said to them,


“I feel deep pity for this crowd because they have continued listening to me for three days now and have nothing [left] to eat.
