Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, A shaking of the head among the people.


And now am I their song, Yea, I am their byword.


And the harp, and the viol, the tabret, and pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither consider the operation of his hands.


then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all people:


Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp?


And the LORD said unto Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that let her be received in again.


I am as one mocked of his neighbour, Who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: The just upright man is laughed to scorn.


Are there not mockers with me? And doth not mine eye continue in their provocation?


They abhor me, they flee far from me, And spare not to spit in my face.


I made sackcloth also my garment; And I became a proverb to them.


My confusion is continually before me, And the shame of my face hath covered me,
