14 The men said to her, “May God take our lives if we don't do as we say! If you do not tell anyone what we have been doing, we promise you that when the Lord gives us this land, we will treat you well.”

“Happy are those who are merciful to others; God will be merciful to them!


Some friendships do not last, but some friends are more loyal than brothers.


Now, if you intend to fulfill your responsibility toward my master and treat him fairly, please tell me; if not, say so, and I will decide what to do.”


As the king was passing by, the prophet called out to him and said, “Your Majesty, I was fighting in the battle when a soldier brought a captured enemy to me and said, ‘Guard this man; if he escapes, you will pay for it with your life or else pay a fine of three thousand pieces of silver.’


One day David asked, “Is there anyone left of Saul's family? If there is, I would like to show him kindness for Jonathan's sake.”


Please do me this favor, and keep the sacred promise you made to me. But if I'm guilty, kill me yourself! Why take me to your father to be killed?”


But Joshua spared the lives of the prostitute Rahab and all her relatives, because she had hidden the two spies that he had sent to Jericho. (Her descendants have lived in Israel to this day.)


The city and everything in it must be totally destroyed as an offering to the Lord. Only the prostitute Rahab and her household will be spared, because she hid our spies.


Promise me that you will save my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all their families! Don't let us be killed!”


Rahab lived in a house built into the city wall, so she let the men down from the window by a rope.


When the time drew near for him to die, he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “Place your hand between my thighs and make a solemn vow that you will not bury me in Egypt.


Joshua then told the two men who had served as spies, “Go into the prostitute's house, and bring her and her family out, as you promised her.”


he sent some men there with the message: “May the Lord bless you for showing your loyalty to your king by burying him.


And now may the Lord be kind and faithful to you. I too will treat you well because of what you have done.


You will earn the trust and respect of others if you work for good; if you work for evil, you are making a mistake.


The commander said, “Don't tell anyone that you have reported this to me.” And he sent the young man away.
