14 When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, “What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning till evening?”

The next day Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from morning till evening.


And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God;


And they judged the people at all times. Any hard case they brought to Moses, but any small matter they decided themselves.


They put him in custody, because it had not been made clear what should be done to him.


And the descendants of the Kenite, Moses’ father-in-law, went up with the people of Judah from the city of palms into the wilderness of Judah, which lies in the Negeb near Arad, and they went and settled with the people.


And Absalom used to rise early and stand beside the way of the gate. And when any man had a dispute to come before the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and say, “From what city are you?” And when he said, “Your servant is of such and such a tribe in Israel,”
