When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of Maacah with 1,000 men, and the men of Tob, 12,000 men.


There was hard fighting against the Philistines all the days of Saul. And when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he attached him to himself.


But the Lord had not said that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, so he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash.


God also raised up as an adversary to him, Rezon the son of Eliada, who had fled from his master Hadadezer king of Zobah.


David also defeated Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to restore his power at the river Euphrates.


Saul lived for one year and then became king, and when he had reigned for two years over Israel,


And now, behold, the king walks before you, and I am old and gray; and behold, my sons are with you. I have walked before you from my youth until this day.


Then Saul went up from pursuing the Philistines, and the Philistines went to their own place.


Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord. His name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul’s herdsmen.


The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab. He is the father of the Moabites to this day.


The younger also bore a son and called his name Ben-ammi. He is the father of the Ammonites to this day.


These are the generations of Esau (that is, Edom).


So Esau settled in the hill country of Seir. (Esau is Edom.)


These are the sons of Esau (that is, Edom), and these are their chiefs.


“From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.


So David reigned over all Israel. And David administered justice and equity to all his people.
