10 For I heard the reproaches of many, and terror on every side: Persecute him, and, let us persecute him: from all the men that were my familiars and continued at my side: if by any means he may be deceived and we may prevail against him and be revenged on him.

In the daytime the Lord hath commanded his mercy; and a canticle to him in the night. With me is prayer to the God of my life.


That made men sin by word, and supplanted him that reproved them in the gate, and declined in vain from the just.


And they said: Come, and let us invent devices against Jeremias, for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us give no heed to all his words.


Neither can they prove unto thee the things whereof they now accuse me.


Slanderers have been in thee to shed blood and they have eaten upon the mountains in thee they have committed wickedness in the midst of thee.


Go not out into the fields, nor walk in the highway: for the sword of the enemy and fear is on every side.


Lying lips hide hatred: he that uttereth reproach is foolish.


And being upon the watch, they sent spies, who should feign themselves just, that they might take hold of him in his words, that they might deliver him up to the authority and power of the governor.


They that were sometime my counsellors have abhorred me: and he whom I love most is turned against me.


And Achab said to Elias: Hast thou found me thy enemy? He said: I have found thee, because thou art sold, to do evil in the sight of the Lord.


And Jezabel sent a messenger to Elias, saying: Such and such things may the gods do to me, and add still more, if by this hour to-morrow I make not thy life as the life of one of them.


Now hearing these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed with their teeth at him.


When they had heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they thought to put them to death.


The wicked are alienated from the womb; they have gone astray from the womb: they have spoken false things.


And tell them: Thus saith the king: Put this man in prison, and feed him with bread of affliction, and water of distress, till I return in peace.


And the king of Israel said to Josaphat: There is one man left, by whom we may inquire of the Lord, Micheas the son of Jemla; but I hate him, for he doth not prophesy good to me, but evil. And Josaphat said: Speak not so, O king.


And I was as a meek lamb that is carried to be a victim: and I knew not that they had devised counsels against me, saying: Let us put wood on his bread and cut him off from the land of the living, and let his name be remembered no more.


Therefore thus saith the Lord to the men of Anathoth, who seek thy life and say: Thou shalt not prophesy in the name of the Lord and thou shalt not die in our hands.


And when it was light the next day, Phassur brought Jeremias out of the stocks. And Jeremias said to him: The Lord hath not called thy name Phassur, but fear on every side.


And Jeremias answered: It is not so, I am not fleeing to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Jerias took Jeremias and brought him to the princes.


I will say to God: Thou art my support. Why hast thou forgotten me? and why go I mourning, whilst my enemy afflicteth me?


And they shall fight against thee and shall not prevail: for I am with thee, saith the Lord, to deliver thee.
