17 And Joseph, seeing that his father had put his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, was much displeased: and taking his father's hand he tried to lift it from Ephraim's head, and to remove it to the head of Manasses.

But he stretching forth his right hand, put it upon the head of Ephraim the younger brother; and the left upon the head of Manasses who was the elder, changing his hands.


For when the children were not yet born, nor had done any good or evil (that the purpose of God, according to election, might stand,)


Lest the Lord see, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.


And God was displeased with this thing that was commanded: and he struck Israel.


And Amri did evil in the sight of the Lord, and acted wickedly above all that were before him.


And the Lord said to Samuel: Look not on his countenance, nor on the height of his stature: because I have rejected him. Nor do I judge according to the look of man: for man seeth those things that appear, but the Lord beholdeth the heart.


Balaam said: I have sinned, not knowing that thou didst stand against me. And now if it displease thee that I go, I will return.


In the mean time there arose a murmuring of the people against the Lord, as it were repining at their fatigue. And when the Lord heard it, he was angry. And the fire of the Lord being kindled against them, devoured them that were at the uttermost part of the camp.


And therefore the Lord slew him, because he did a detestable thing.


Experiencing also that his father was not well pleased with the daughters of Chanaan:


And he said to his father: It should not be so, my father: for this is the firstborn, put thy right hand upon his head.


And this lot fell to the tribe of Manasses (for he is the firstborn of Joseph), to Machir the firstborn of Manasses the father of Galaad, who was a warlike man, and had for possession Galaad and Basan.
