23 People of Capernaum, do you think you will be honored in heaven? You will go down to hell! If the miracles that took place in your town had happened in Sodom, it would still be standing.

But instead of staying in Nazareth, Jesus moved to Capernaum. This town was beside Lake Galilee in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali.


where the people were evil and sinned terribly against the Lord.


Their bodies will be left lying in the streets of the same great city where their Lord was nailed to a cross. And this city is spiritually like the city of Sodom or the country of Egypt.


We should also be warned by what happened to the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and the nearby towns. Their people became immoral and committed all sorts of sexual sins. Then God made an example of them and punished them with eternal fire.


The Lord won't leave me in the grave. I am his holy one, and he won't let my body decay.


If you put yourself above others, you will be put down. But if you humble yourself, you will be honored.


So I will call you Peter, which means “a rock.” On this rock I will build my church, and death itself will not have any power over it.


When Jesus was going into the town of Capernaum, an army officer came up to him and said,


I will still bring you down, even if you fly higher than an eagle or nest among the stars. I, the Lord, have spoken!


The Lord was angry! So he disgraced Zion though it was Israel's pride and his own place of rest. In his anger he threw Zion down from heaven to earth.


He went to hell and was suffering terribly. When he looked up and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side,


Jesus answered: You will certainly want to tell me this saying, “Doctor, first make yourself well.” You will tell me to do the same things here in my own hometown that you heard I did in Capernaum.


When Jesus and the others arrived in Capernaum, the collectors for the temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Does your teacher pay the temple tax?”


and carry you down to the world of the dead, where you will join people of ancient times and towns ruined long ago. You will stay there and never again be a city filled with people.


Never again will any tree dare to grow as tall as this tree, no matter how much water it has. Every tree must die, just as humans die and go down to the world of the dead.


Ezekiel, son of man, mourn for the Egyptians and condemn them to the world of the dead, where they will be buried alongside the people of other powerful nations.


The graves of soldiers from Elam are there. The very sight of those godless soldiers once terrified their enemies and made them panic. But now they are disgraced and ashamed as they lie in the world of the dead, alongside others who were killed in battle.


I promise you the day of judgment will be easier for the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.


People of Capernaum, do you think you will be honored in heaven? Well, you will go down to hell!


David knew this would happen, and so he told us Christ would be raised to life. He said God would not leave him in the grave or let his body decay.


and the living one. I died, but now I am alive forever, and I have the keys to death and the world of the dead.


Then I saw a pale green horse. Its rider was named Death, and Death's Kingdom followed close behind. They were given power over one fourth of the earth, and they could kill its people with swords, famines, diseases, and wild animals.


The sea gave up the dead people who were in it, and death and its kingdom also gave up their dead. Then everyone was judged by what they had done.
