Then, when John's work was almost done, he said, “Who do you people think I am? Do you think I am the Promised One? He will come later, and I am not good enough to untie his sandals.”


Everyone who has faith in the Son has eternal life. But no one who rejects him will ever share in that life, and God will be angry with them forever.


They went to John and said, “Rabbi, you spoke about a man when you were with him east of the Jordan. He is now baptizing people, and everyone is going to him.”


I saw this happen, and I tell you that he is the Son of God.


He is the one I told you about when I said, “Someone else will come, who is greater than I am, because he was alive before I was born.”


The disciples talked this over and said to each other, “He must be saying this because we didn't bring along any bread.”


Who gave John the right to baptize? Was it God in heaven or merely some human being?” They thought it over and said to each other, “We can't say God gave John this right. Jesus will ask us why we didn't believe John.
