11 The Pharisee stood over by himself and prayed, “God, I thank you that I am not greedy, dishonest, and unfaithful in marriage like other people. And I am really glad that I am not like that tax collector over there.

When you pray, don't be like those show-offs who love to stand up and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners. They do this just to look good. I can assure you that they already have their reward.


You claim to be rich and successful and to have everything you need. But you don't know how bad off you really are. You are pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.


And then they say to others, “Don't come near us! We're dedicated to God.” Such people are like smoke, irritating my nose all day.


you claim to be innocent, and you want me to stop being angry with you. So I'll take you to court, and we'll see who is right.


Whenever you stand up to pray, you must forgive what others have done to you. Then your Father in heaven will forgive your sins.


Anyone who tries to please God by obeying the Law is under a curse. The Scriptures say, “Everyone who doesn't obey everything in the Law is under a curse.”


But they cheat widows out of their homes and then pray long prayers just to show off. These teachers will be punished most of all.


You leaders accept bribes for dishonest decisions. You priests and prophets teach and preach, but only for money. Then you say, “The Lord is on our side. No harm will come to us.”


So they all come and listen to you, but they refuse to do what you tell them. They claim to be faithful, but they are forever trying to cheat others out of their money.


Go cry to the gods you made! There should be enough of them to save you, because Judah has as many gods as it has towns.


Day after day, you worship him and seem eager to learn his teachings. You act like a nation that wants to do right by obeying his laws. You ask him about justice, and say you enjoy worshiping the Lord.


All who serve in the temple of the Lord our God,


Everyone who serves the Lord, come and offer praises. Everyone who has gathered in his temple tonight,


And I was so eager I even made trouble for the church. I did everything the Law demands in order to please God.


“No matter how much you pray, I won't listen. You are too violent.


There are many who say, “You can trust me!” But can they be trusted?


others think they are perfect, but they are stained by sin.


You must obey God's commands better than the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law obey them. If you don't, I promise you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.


Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew the tax collector, James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus were also apostles.
