2 So he prayed: Our Lord, I knew from the very beginning that you wouldn't destroy Nineveh. That's why I left my own country and headed for Spain. You are a kind and merciful God, and you are very patient. You always show love, and you don't like to punish anyone.

But you, the Lord God, are kind and merciful. You don't easily get angry, and your love can always be trusted.


You are merciful, Lord! You are kind and patient and always loving.


You willingly forgive, and your love is always there for those who pray to you.


Our God, no one is like you. We are all that is left of your chosen people, and you freely forgive our sin and guilt. You don't stay angry forever; you're glad to have pity


and that nation turns from its evil, I will change my mind.


So even though the Lord had threatened to destroy the people, he changed his mind and let them live.


Yet God was kind. He kept forgiving their sins and didn't destroy them. He often became angry, but never lost his temper.


Then the Lord felt sorry and answered, “I won't let it be destroyed.”


When God saw that the people had stopped doing evil things, he had pity and did not destroy them as he had planned.


Instead, Jonah ran from the Lord. He went to the seaport of Joppa and found a ship that was going to Spain. So he paid his fare, then got on the ship and sailed away to escape.


then walked another whole day into the desert. Finally, he came to a large bush and sat down in its shade. He begged the Lord, “I've had enough. Just let me die! I'm no better off than my ancestors.”


Again the Lord felt sorry and answered, “I won't let it be destroyed.”


Help us, Lord! Don't wait! Pity your servants.


But the man wanted to show that he knew what he was talking about. So he asked Jesus, “Who are my neighbors?”


You tricked me, Lord, and I was really fooled. You are stronger than I am, and you have defeated me. People never stop sneering and insulting me.


The Lord your God will have mercy—he won't destroy you or desert you. The Lord will remember his promise, and he will keep the agreement he made with your ancestors.


The Lord is merciful! He is kind and patient, and his love never fails.


I am sorry that I had to punish you, and so I now tell you to stay here in Judah, where I will plant you and build you up, instead of tearing you down and uprooting you.
