Our warriors have fallen, and their weapons are destroyed.


Our warriors have fallen in the heat of battle, and Jonathan lies dead on the hills of Gilboa.


Zion's glory has disappeared! And we are doomed because of our sins.


On that same day, I broke the stick named “Mercy” to show that the Lord had canceled his agreement with all people.


So I became a shepherd of those sheep doomed to be slaughtered by the sheep dealers. And I gave names to the two sticks I used for tending the sheep: One of them was named “Mercy” and the other “Unity.”


The Lord was angry! So he disgraced Zion though it was Israel's pride and his own place of rest. In his anger he threw Zion down from heaven to earth.


The time is coming when the Lord will make his land fruitful and glorious again, and the people of Israel who survive will take great pride in what the land produces.


It was easy to love Saul and Jonathan. Together in life, together in death, they were faster than eagles and stronger than lions.


The day after the battle, when the Philistines returned to the battlefield to take the weapons of the dead Israelite soldiers, they found Saul and his three sons lying dead on Mount Gilboa.


Like a young plant or a root that sprouts in dry ground, the servant grew up obeying the Lord. He wasn't some handsome king. Nothing about the way he looked made him attractive to us.
