God has rescued you from your troubles and hard times. But you have rejected your God and have asked for a king. Now each tribe and clan must come near the place of worship so the Lord can choose a king.


Now bring me the enemies who didn't want me to be their king. Kill them while I watch!”


My followers, whoever listens to you is listening to me. Anyone who says “No” to you is saying “No” to me. And anyone who says “No” to me is really saying “No” to the one who sent me.


Then Moses continued, “You will know it is the Lord when he gives you meat each evening and more than enough bread each morning. He is really the one you are complaining about, not us—we are nobodies—but the Lord has heard your complaints.”


But the people of his country hated him, and they sent messengers to the foreign country to say, “We don't want this man to be our king.”


Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me. And anyone who welcomes me also welcomes the one who sent me.


I tell you for certain that servants are not greater than their master, and messengers are not greater than the one who sent them.


You refused to answer when I called out; you paid no attention to my instructions. Instead, you did what I hated, knowing it was wrong. Now I will punish you in a way you dread the most.


That night, God said, “Balaam, I'll let you go to Moab with Balak's messengers, but do only what I say.”


“No,” Gideon replied, “I won't be your king, and my son won't be king either. Only the Lord is your ruler.


Ever since the day I rescued my people from Egypt, they have turned from me to worship idols. Now they are turning away from you.


“Do what they want,” the Lord answered. “Give them a king.” Samuel told the people to go back to their homes.


Samuel told the Israelites: I have given you a king, just as you asked.


Then you saw that King Nahash of Ammon was going to attack you. And even though the Lord your God is your king, you told me, “This time it's different. We want a king to rule us!”

Ezekiel, I am sending you to the people of Israel. They are just like their ancestors who rebelled against me and refused to stop.


But the people of Israel will refuse to listen, because they have refused to listen to me. All of them are stubborn and hardheaded,
