and he named the place Bethel. Before that it had been named Luz.


Finally, they reached Bethel, also known as Luz.


The Lord told Joshua, “It was a disgrace for my people to be slaves in Egypt, but now I have taken away that disgrace.” So the Israelites named the place Gilgal, and it still has that name.


Israel continued to camp at Gilgal in the desert near Jericho, and on the fourteenth day of the same month, they celebrated Passover.


Then Samuel said, “Tell everyone in Israel to meet together at Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.”


“Come on!” Samuel said. “Let's go to Gilgal and make an agreement that Saul will continue to be our king.”


Don't go to Gilgal or Bethel or even to Beersheba. Gilgal will be dragged away, and Bethel will end up as nothing.”


Samuel sent messengers to tell the Israelites to come to Mizpah and meet with the Lord.


Listen, you priests! Pay attention, Israel! Listen, you members of the royal family. Justice was your duty. But at Mizpah and Mount Tabor you trapped the people.
