⁴ Workers’ salaries aren’t credited to them on the basis of an employer’s grace but rather on the basis of what they deserve.

And if it is by grace, then it is not now by works; otherwise grace is no longer free.

Why is this? Because they did not seek it from faith, but as if it were from works. For they stumbled over a stumbling block,

Or who first gave to him, so that repayment would be owed?

We have been justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
