just as you petitioned of the Lord your God at Horeb, when the assembly was gathered together, and you said: 'Let me no longer hear the voice of the Lord my God, and let me no longer see this very great fire, lest I die.'


This is he who was in the Church in the wilderness, with the Angel who was speaking to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. It is he who received the words of life to give to us.


Why, then, was there a law? It was established because of transgressions, until the offspring would arrive, to whom he made the promise, ordained by Angels through the hand of a mediator.


And again he said: "You are not able to see my face. For man shall not see me and live."


I was the mediator, for I was in the middle between the Lord and you, at that time, to announce his words to you. For you were afraid of the fire, and so you did not ascend to the mountain. And he said:


And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, "I have seen God face to face, and my soul has been saved."


or the sound of a trumpet, or a voice of words. Those who had experienced these things excused themselves, lest the Word be spoken to them.


And he said, "I heard your voice in Paradise, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and so I hid myself."
