17 And when he had seen the Angel cutting down the people, David said to the Lord: "I am the one who sinned. I have acted iniquitously. These ones who are the sheep, what have they done? I beg you that your hand may be turned against me and against my father's house."

Then the heart of David struck him, after the people were numbered. And David said to the Lord: "I have sinned greatly in what I have done. But I pray that you, O Lord, may take away the iniquity of your servant. For I have acted very foolishly."


Therefore, I find myself reprehensible, and I will do penance in embers and ashes.


Awake, O spear, against my shepherd and against the man that clings to me, says the Lord of hosts. Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered. And I will turn my hand to the little ones.


And I said: "Woe to me! For I have remained silent. For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live in the midst of a people having unclean lips, and I have seen with my eyes the King, the Lord of hosts!"


Listen, daughter, and see, and incline your ear. And forget your people and your father's house.


I have sinned; what should I do for you, O keeper of men? Why have you set me against you, so that I have become burdensome even to myself?


And he said: "I saw all of Israel scattered among the hills, like sheep that have no shepherd. And the Lord said: 'These have no master. Let each of them return to his own house in peace.' "


And so I, your servant, will remain in place of the boy, in ministry to my lord, and then let the boy go up with his brothers.


And as they drew near, he said: "Will you destroy the just with the impious?


And now, so shall you speak to my servant David: 'Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from the pastures, from following the sheep, so that you would be the leader over my people Israel.


And he said to them, "Take me, and cast me into the sea, and the sea will cease for you. For I know that it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you."


For this reason, Pharaoh hurriedly called Moses and Aaron, and he said to them: "I have sinned against the Lord your God, and against you.


But they fell prone on their faces, and they said, "O most strong One, the God of the spirits of all flesh, should your anger rage against all, for the sin of one?"


And David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the Lord." And Nathan said to David: "The Lord has also taken away your sin. You shall not die.


He loves mercy and judgment. The earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.
