Thou makest us a byword among the nations, A shaking of the head among the peoples.


And now I am become their song, Yea, I am a byword unto them.


And the harp and the lute, the tabret and the pipe, and wine, are in their feasts; but they regard not the work of Jehovah, neither have they considered the operation of his hands.


then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all peoples.


Wherefore didst thou flee secretly, and steal away from me, and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth and with songs, with tabret and with harp;


And Jehovah said unto Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut up without the camp seven days, and after that she shall be brought in again.


I am as one that is a laughing-stock to his neighbor, I who called upon God, and he answered: The just, the perfect man is a laughing-stock.


Surely there are mockers with me, And mine eye dwelleth upon their provocation.


They abhor me, they stand aloof from me, And spare not to spit in my face.


When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword unto them.


All the day long is my dishonor before me, And the shame of my face hath covered me,
