Some individuals become so engrossed in their daydreams that they reject reality in favor of residing in a fantasy world. The Bible references daydreaming a few times, but never in a positive manner. Daydreaming is typically associated with laziness or other unproductive pursuits “For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.”, (Ecclesiastes 5:7). However, daydreaming should not be mistaken for actual dreams or visions through which God has occasionally revealed truth to individuals (Genesis 31:11;Acts 2:17).

Daydreaming (also known as “woolgathering” at times) can be a pleasant pastime and a method to plan and assess the wisdom of future decisions. We all relish moments of envisioning success or fantasizing about the “if only’s” or “what if’s.” However, when daydreaming serves as an excuse for lust or hidden sin, it is always inappropriate (James 1:14;Mark 7:21). If daydreams take the place of responsibilities or reality, they are foolish. Isaiah 56:10 censures the futile activities of Israel’s leaders during Isaiah’s era: “Israel’s watchmen are blind, they all lack knowledge; they are all mute dogs, they cannot bark; they lie around and dream, they love to sleep.” In this reprimand, God highlights that those who should have remained vigilant and alert to danger were instead engaging in daydreams and squandering time. We frequently commit the same error.

Daydreaming can serve as a means of evading current circumstances rather than confronting and transforming them. A boy who daydreams about becoming an NFL star instead of studying for genuine success is wasteful.

Investing his time and potential. A minimum-wage worker who spends her free time daydreaming about having a better job instead of actually working toward getting a better job is sacrificing her future on the altar of fantasy. When we daydream to plan our next steps, daydreaming can be productive. But when we indulge in daydreams instead of taking action, daydreaming is destructive.

Answer Daydreaming is a way of spending time by imagining situations or events as we wish them to be.
