Why is it important to study the various characters in the Bible?

Answer

The Bible is filled with characters, both literally and figuratively. Perhaps the most fitting way to describe how the Bible portrays its characters is as “human” because they are, indeed, human. The Bible is authentic, and the individuals that populate its pages were genuine people with real lives, genuine relationships, true joys, and actual problems, just like us. The Bible does not avoid presenting both the strengths and weaknesses of those it depicts. This renders the characters in the Bible “practical” in that we can relate to them and educational in that we can learn from their accomplishments and failures.

Studying the individuals in the Bible is not solely about knowing historical facts. Through their narratives, we discover who God is, we identify human tendencies, and we learn through example, both from positive instances and cautionary tales. Even in today’s society, we acknowledge the influence of storytelling in understanding the lives of our contemporaries and ancestors. As “all Scripture is God-breathed and is beneficial for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17), focusing on the individuals in the Bible is advantageous.

For instance, from Adam and Eve, we observe the risks of questioning what God has stated and doubting His goodness. We witness the inclination to shift blame rather than confess our own wrongdoing. We also learn how to find joy in God’s forgiveness and the assurance of restoration. In the story of Adam and Eve, we see how God extends an invitation to people for a relationship and how He is merciful.

The patriarchs also offer valuable lessons for us. Abraham illustrates the importance of faith. We also witness his mistakes when he deceives and the repercussions of attempting to hasten God’s plans instead of waiting on Him. In Jacob, we see that God remains faithful to fulfill His promises.promises, even to those who plot. We observe how our sinful inclinations can backfire and bring us suffering. We are cautioned against showing favoritism and witness its far-reaching consequences.

In Moses’ narrative, we realize that at times we may misinterpret God’s timing or His methods and attempt to embark on a righteous mission independently, which ends poorly. We witness how God equips us for His calling. We also witness God’s tolerance of our anxieties and uncertainties. We grasp the significance of wholeheartedly following God and acknowledging His holiness.

From Rahab and Ruth, we understand that God welcomes individuals of all backgrounds into His purpose, not exclusively those of Jewish lineage. We perceive His faithfulness to those who walk in His ways.

The kings of Israel impart numerous teachings to us. In Saul, we discern the significance of compliance and modesty. In David, we see God’s mercy. We learn that even in moments of grave wrongdoing, we can seek God’s forgiveness and receive compassion. We comprehend the importance of calling upon God in every circumstance. We witness intricate family dynamics and are cautioned about tending to our families. In Solomon, we recognize the worth of wisdom as well as the folly of disregarding it. We are alerted to the perils of others leading our hearts astray from God. In Ahab, we witness how corrupt leadership can impact an entire nation. In Hezekiah, we witness the marvelous outcomes of faith in God even in apparently insurmountable circumstances.

In Elijah, we acknowledge that we may sometimes feel isolated. We witness fear and despondency. We also witness God’s provision and His faithfulness. In other prophets, we see that serving God often entails being distinct or ostracized. We witness their profound encounters with suffering that God utilized to instill in them compassion for those He instructed them to caution. Through this, we acknowledge that God possesses a compassionate heart, and we witness His patience, His kindness, His righteousness, and His holiness. We recognize the value of obedience and the significance of God’s Word.

The New Testament is similarly replete with figures from whom we can glean lessons. InPeter demonstrates impulsiveness and bold leadership. Mary of Bethany exemplifies the importance of sitting at Jesus’ feet and emphasizes that Jesus is highly deserving of our worship. Paul’s life showcases the transformative power of God. We witness how wholeheartedly following the Lord can result in various reactions from others, practical challenges, consistent provision, and unimaginable joys. Lois and Eunice illustrate the significance of educating children and nurturing them in the ways of the Lord.

The examples are endless. Regardless of your personality and challenges, there is a figure in the Bible with whom you can connect and from whom you can learn.

The apostle Paul wrote, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” «Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. », (1 Corinthians 11:1). Ultimately, this should be our objective when studying Bible characters. Where they succeeded in following God, we should strive to imitate them. Where they stumbled, we should strive to avoid repeating the same mistakes. “Now these things happened as examples to keep us from craving evil things as they did. . . . These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us. . . . No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:6-13).
