Why is a multitude of counselors valuable (Proverbs 15:22)?

Answer

Proverbs 15:22 states, “Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counselors they are established” (KJV). Proverbs 11:14 and 24:6 also emphasize the importance of having “many advisers” or a “multitude of counselors.” The fundamental idea is that seeking advice from a diverse group of individuals is wise rather than relying solely on personal knowledge or intuition. Considering different perspectives and tapping into the wisdom of others is beneficial.

Certainly, twenty foolish advisers are no more helpful than one, so the quality of counselors sought significantly impacts the outcome. The Bible provides examples of individuals who followed misguided counsel and faced disastrous consequences (Genesis 3:17;Genesis 16:2;Joshua 9:14;1 Chronicles 10: 13-14;2 Chronicles 22:4). Having a multitude of counselors is ineffective if those counselors lack wisdom.

Humans are fallible. No one is infallible. Even the wisest and most godly individuals are prone to human error. Depending solely on the advice of one person sets us up for disappointment and potential disaster. It is wise to surround ourselves with trusted advisers—a multitude of counselors—recognizing that even the wise may have differing perspectives.

The value of having a multitude of counselors lies in the fact that considering diverse viewpoints provides a stronger foundation for forming opinions. Optimal decisions are made when issues are thoroughly explored from various angles, seeking the Lord’s wisdom «If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. », (James 1:5).

Seek wisdom as stated in (James 1:5), and progress in faith «(for we walk by faith, not by sight:) », according to (2 Corinthians 5:7).
