What should a Christian’s view be on stem cell research?

Answer

With the ongoing debate on stem cell research, it is advisable for Christians to educate themselves about the subject and its implications. Healing diseases and easing suffering are commendable goals, and the Bible unequivocally supports the fight against physical ailments. A significant aspect of Jesus’ ministry was His ability to heal (Matthew 4:23-24), and one of the New Testament authors, Luke, was a physician, as mentioned in Colossians 4:14. Stem cell research has displayed significant potential in the relatively new field of regenerative medicine, with numerous groups actively exploring innovative methods of extracting stem cells and examining their plasticity—their capacity to develop into various mature cell types.

The primary question regarding stem cell research is not “Is it legal?” or “Is it cost-effective?” but rather “Is it ethical?” The fundamental issue revolves around discerning God’s will. Before addressing the ethical and moral dilemmas, it is crucial to differentiate between two types of stem cells: adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells.

Research on adult stem cells has been ongoing for many years and has demonstrated therapeutic benefits in the treatment of cancer, autoimmune diseases, leukemia, and heart disease. Adult stem cells are sourced from living bone marrow, blood, brain tissue, skin, and adipose tissue. Additionally, umbilical cord blood and the placenta are rich sources of adult stem cells.

Embryonic stem cells, as their name implies, are derived from human embryos. To obtain embryonic stem cells, an embryo must be destroyed. At the core of the discussion lies our perception of the human embryo. According to biblical teachings, human life commences at conception (Psalm 139:13-16; J(Psalm 139:13-16; Jeremiah 1:4-5). The international consensus of embryologists agrees with Scripture that life commences at fertilization. At the moment of conception, the embryo is entirely human, possessing all 46 human chromosomes and a fully operational, distinct genetic code. Size and location are not indicators of humanity.

Research involving embryonic stem cells necessitates the termination of a living human being, which contradicts God’s intentions. No potential “benefit” to society or medical knowledge can morally justify the destruction of a human for spare parts. The end does not validate the means. It is never ethical—indeed, it is morally reprehensible—to designate individuals for death to carry out utilitarian experiments on their body parts.

Conversely, research on adult stem cells does not result in loss of life. Adult stem cells exhibit versatility and a proven track record, without the moral dilemmas associated with embryonic stem cells. Therefore, we assert that research on adult stem cells is a valid area of study, fully aligned with God’s intentions.
