What is the legend of the dogwood tree?

Answer

The Bible does not specify the type of wood used for the cross on which Jesus was crucified. Roman history also lacks details on the construction of crosses or the wood type utilized. There is a legend suggesting the cross was crafted from dogwood, although this seems improbable due to the tree’s typical size. The legend of the dogwood tree, of unknown authorship, goes as follows:

During Jesus’ era, the dogwood grew

To an impressive size and beautiful color.

It was robust and sturdy, with intertwined branches.

Its timber was supposedly chosen for Christ’s cross.

Upon realizing the distress caused by this purpose

Christ made a lasting vow:

“The dogwood shall never again

Grow large enough for such use.

It shall be slender and twisted,

With blossoms resembling the cross.

As brown marks stain the petals,

A thorny crown adorns the blossom’s center.

All who witness it will recall

My crucifixion on a dogwood cross.

This tree shall be cherished and safeguarded

As a reminder of My suffering.”

However, this remains a mere legend. While a beautiful poem, it lacks biblical foundation.
