What is the hypostatic union?

Response

The hypostatic union refers to how God the Son, Jesus Christ, assumed a human nature while remaining fully God. Jesus always existed as God “Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”, (John 8:58, 10:30), but during the incarnation, Jesus took on human form “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”, (John 1:14). By adding human nature to divine nature, Jesus became the God-man. This union is known as the hypostatic union, where Jesus Christ is one Person, fully God and fully man.

The two natures of Jesus, human and divine, are inseparable. Jesus will always be the God-man, fully God and fully human, with two distinct natures in one Person. Jesus’ humanity and divinity are not mixed but are united without losing their separate identities. At times, Jesus operated within the limitations of humanity “Jacob’s well was there, so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.”, (John 4:6, 19:28), and at other times in the power of His deity (John 11:43; Matthew 14:18-21). In both cases, Jesus’ actions stemmed from His one Person. Although Jesus had two natures, He had only one personality.

The doctrine of the hypostatic union seeks to explain how Jesus could be both God and man simultaneously. However, it is a doctrine that we cannot fully comprehend. It is beyond our ability to fully grasp how God operates. As human beings with finite minds, we

One should not expect to fully comprehend an infinite God. Jesus is God’s Son in that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit «And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. », (Luke 1:35). However, that does not imply that Jesus did not exist before He was conceived. Jesus has always existed «Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. », (John 8:58,10:30). When Jesus was conceived, He became a human being in addition to being God «In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. », (John 1:1,14) «And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. », (John 1:1,14).

Jesus is both God and man. Jesus has always been God, but He did not become a human being until He was conceived in Mary. Jesus became a human being in order to identify with us in our struggles «Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. », (Hebrews 2:17) and, more importantly, so that He could die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins (Philippians 2:5-11). In summary, the hypostatic union teaches that Jesus is both fully human and fully divine.

that there is no mixture or dilution of either nature, and that He is one united Person, forever.
