What is the Adam-God theory in Mormonism?

Answer

The Adam-God theory is a contentious concept in Mormonism, the body of beliefs upheld by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). The idea of Adam-God was initially introduced by Brigham Young, who succeeded LDS founder Joseph Smith. Young asserted that Adam was God the Father, notably in a sermon delivered in 1852:

“Now hear it, O inhabitants of the earth, Jew and Gentile, Saint and sinner! When our father Adam entered the garden of Eden, he did so with a celestial body and brought Eve, one of his wives, with him. He participated in the creation and organization of this world. He is Michael, the Archangel, the Ancient of Days! about whom holy men have written and spoken—He is our Father and our God, the only God with whom we have to do.”

“. . . Jesus, our elder brother, was conceived in the flesh by the same being who was in the garden of Eden, and who is our Father in Heaven. Now, let all who may hear these teachings pause before dismissing them or treating them lightly, for they will determine their salvation or damnation.”

Quoted from A Sermon by President Brigham Young, Delivered in the Tabernacle, Great Salt Lake City, April 9, 1852. Reported by G. D. Watt.
