Queer theory, as defined by the Oxford English Dictionary, is an approach to social and cultural studies that aims to challenge traditional concepts of sexuality and gender. It questions the normativity of heterosexuality and the strict division of male and female characteristics.
There is a current societal trend towards embracing queer theory and a movement that advocates for the naturalness of homosexual and/or transgender lifestyles. Some argue that individuals are inherently homosexual and/or transgender from birth. Let’s explore what the Bible teaches on these matters.
Queer theory dismisses the notion of distinct male and female traits, instead advocating for fluidity in gender and asserting the existence of numerous genders. However, the Bible asserts that there are only two genders: male and female. From the outset, God intended for man and woman to come together in a marital union (Genesis 2:18-24). In essence, heterosexuality is the sole sexuality ordained by God. Eve was specifically created by God as a “suitable helper” for Adam “And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”, (Genesis 2:18). God did not fashion another man for Adam but a woman, according to His divine plan.
God is the Creator of humanity. Every individual is His masterpiece “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”, (Ephesians 2:10), and God intricately formed each person in their mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13-16). GGod designed each of us as He wanted, including the gender He assigned to us. Every person has meaning and worth, and God has a good and perfect plan for each individual. Those who reject their God-given gender have sinned against the very God who created them.
Queer theory suggests that heterosexuality is not the norm and should not be considered as such. It is evident that the Bible presents heterosexuality as God’s design and explicitly condemns homosexual behavior in both the Old Testament (e.g., Leviticus 18:22) and the New Testament (e.g., Romans 1:24-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; 1 Timothy 1:9-11). In the passage from Romans, homosexuality is described as “degrading,” “shameful,” “unnatural,” and an “error.” To suggest that God creates a person to be homosexual would contradict His Word.
By rejecting the Word of God, queer theory seeks to “deconstruct traditional ideas of sexuality and gender.” By disregarding the instructions given by God, proponents of queer theory create their own guide for sexuality, based on their own notions and preferences. Even if they do not identify as LGBTQ themselves, they are providing support for those who rebel against God and His design.
The core of queer theory is not love, tolerance, or acceptance, but the sinful nature of all human beings (see Romans 5:12). From birth, each person has a natural inclination to do wrong, not right (Isaiah 53:6; Romans 3:10-12). We are sinful beings enslaved to the desires of our flesh, and our sin creates a separation from God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10).
God did not create us as sinners; instead, we have chosen to sin. Rejecting traditional/biblical sexuality is a sinful decision that some people make.E for a variety of reasons, but it ultimately appeals to the desires of their flesh. The harsh reality about our sin issue is difficult to acknowledge, but by recognizing that we have a problem, we have taken the initial step toward the necessary salvation. This salvation is freely offered to us through faith in Jesus Christ (John 3:16 Ephesians 2:8-9).
Sin is deceitful. It is deeply ingrained in who we are in our fallen state (Ephesians 2:1-3)—to the extent that it seems right. When our conscience starts troubling us, we tend to rationalize the sin, often by claiming that it feels right, it brings us joy, or everyone else is doing it as well. When our beloved family or friends openly participate in sin, we feel pressured to compromise our beliefs. This contributes to social pressure and the demand for “tolerance.”
Queer theory is ungodly as it presents sin, as outlined in Scripture, as acceptable and even commendable. The current push to embrace queer theory exemplifies the message of Proverbs 14:12: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” It may appear correct to discard the “old” moral standards and pursue what feels right, but ultimately God’s Word will remain true (see Isaiah 40:7-8 and Romans 3:4).
Christians are urged to live by and adhere to the Word of God, not by the constantly changing philosophies and theories of humanity.
