What is heterodoxy?

Answer

The term “heterodox” is used to describe something that deviates from orthodox beliefs. Heterodoxy encompasses opinions or doctrines that differ from orthodoxy, which is the established position. While heterodoxy contradicts the church’s orthodox stance, it does not necessarily imply heresy or error. Sometimes, heterodox perspectives align more closely with biblical teachings than the prevailing orthodox views.

For instance, Martin Luther’s advocacy for salvation through grace by faith directly opposed Catholic teachings, leading to his works being labeled as heterodox. His concepts challenged the prevailing orthodoxy and presented a more biblically grounded alternative to the church’s established dogma. Luther’s embrace of heterodoxy ultimately sparked the Protestant Reformation, facilitated the translation of the Bible into common languages, and promoted a more scriptural comprehension of the gospel. When a belief contradicts the Bible, it is deemed heretical. However, orthodox and heterodox positions can evolve based on the dominant religious authority’s perspectives. As exemplified in Martin Luther’s narrative, a biblical standpoint can itself be considered heterodox, with sound theological principles being viewed as heterodox.

Jesus Himself espoused heterodox teachings. The religious leaders of His era propagated the idea that strict adherence to the Law could be achieved through self-righteous efforts. This approach lacked mercy, grace, and reliance on God, a stance that Jesus criticized, stating, “But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”, (Matthew 9:13). Jesus consistently opposed the Pharisees and scribes, challenging their interpretation of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:1-8), condemning their additions.

S to the Word of God « However, in vain do they worship me, Teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. », (Mark 7:7), calling them “blind guides” «Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. », (Matthew 23:24), and even proclaiming “woes” on them for their stubborn false teaching (Luke 11).

Like Jesus, we should use the Bible as our guide, rather than prevailing religious opinion or the teaching of any church. Many churches teach what is biblical, but each of us is responsible to know God’s Word individually. Doctrine should never be accepted simply because it is “orthodox”; sometimes the heterodox position is more biblical. We must see that what are taught is indeed true according to the Scripture «These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. », (Acts 17:11).
