What is escapism?

Answer

Escapism is the act of trying to set aside negative thoughts or feelings by seeking a distraction from reality. This is often manifested through fantasy, where individuals envision or fantasize about an alternate world. Escapism can also manifest itself in tangible ways, such as through the consumption of food, engagement in sexual activities, substance abuse, or involvement in sports. The term escapism typically carries a negative connotation, implying that individuals who seek diversions are irresponsibly evading “real life.” However, any activity aimed at diverting attention from certain aspects of daily life can be considered a form of escapism. Therefore, not all forms of escapism are inherently negative. Nevertheless, excessive indulgence in escapism, or engaging in inappropriate forms of escapism, can have detrimental effects.

In a general sense, nearly all types of entertainment can be viewed as forms of escapism. It is natural for people to grow weary of directly confronting the significant challenges of life, such as work, health issues, household responsibilities, financial obligations, family duties, and so on. Recreation, in essence, allows individuals to momentarily “escape” from the mental and emotional burdens associated with these matters. When an individual reads a book, watches a movie, participates in sports, listens to music they enjoy, daydreams, or pursues a hobby, they are taking a respite from the less pleasant aspects of “reality.”

However, the term escapism commonly pertains to activities that actively disengage our minds and thoughts from the real world. Fantasies, whether in the form of books or movies depicting alternate realities, represent just one facet of escapism. True escapism involves a departure from the confines of the “real” world, as individuals seek something different, better, or more aligned with their preferences. Notably, the fundamental characteristic of classic escapism is the intention to avoid; it entails a conscious effort to momentarily detach from reality.

The Bible portrays concepts like work and diligence in a positive light (Colossians 3:23; Proverbs 12:11; Proverbs 18:9). At the same time, the concept of “rest” is fundamental to God’s relationship with mankind (Genesis 2:1-3; Exodus 20:11; Mark 2:27). There is nothing unbiblical about “taking a break,” whether physically or mentally. Some activities that could be labeled as “escapism” fall into this category: an acceptable way to rest from the everyday pressures of life. C. S. Lewis often advocated for the value of fantasy literature and imagination for this very reason. Diversions are not inherently wrong just because they involve imagining a different world or changes to this one.

While the Bible promotes appropriate recreation and refreshment, it also cautions against excess. Wasting our time, neglecting our responsibilities, harming our bodies, or flirting with addiction are all indicators that we have crossed a boundary from reasonable rest into excessive escapism. God urges us to recharge « Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. », (Matthew 11:28) and to anticipate a new and improved world (Hebrews 11:14-16). Nevertheless, He does not want us to foolishly disregard what is factual and real (1 Corinthians 8:9; 2 Peter 3:17).
