Answer
There is much confusion surrounding the significance of Easter Sunday. Some associate it with the Easter Bunny, colorful Easter eggs, and egg hunts. While many recognize its connection to Jesus’ resurrection, they are puzzled by how this relates to the Easter traditions.
Biblically, there is no direct link between Jesus Christ’s resurrection and the modern Easter customs. Historically, the Roman Catholic Church blended the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection with spring fertility rituals to appeal to non-Christians. These rituals are the origins of the egg and bunny customs.
The Bible states that Jesus rose on the first day of the week, Sunday (Matthew 28:1;Mark 16:2,9;Luke 24:1;John 20:1,19). His resurrection is a significant event (see 1 Corinthians 15). While it is fitting to commemorate Jesus’ resurrection on a Sunday, the day should not be called Easter, as Easter is unrelated to Jesus’ resurrection on a Sunday.
Therefore, many Christians believe that the day of Jesus’ resurrection should be known as “Resurrection Sunday” instead of “Easter Sunday.” This change would be more suitable and in line with biblical teachings.
As a Christian, it is inconceivable that we would permit the triviality of Easter eggs and the Easter bunny to take center stage on the day instead of Jesus’ resurrection.
Certainly, commemorate Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday. Christ’s resurrection is something that merits celebration every day, not solely once a year. Simultaneously, if we opt to observe Easter Sunday, we should not let the amusement and festivities divert our focus from what the day genuinely signifies—the reality that Jesus was raised from the dead, and that His resurrection signifies that we can indeed be assured of an eternal home in Heaven by accepting Jesus as our Savior.
