What is chivalry?

The English term chivalry is derived from the Old French word chevalerie, originating in medieval times and referring to the conduct code expected of knights. Chivalry is commonly associated with polite behavior, particularly men’s respect toward women. In the past, chivalry was a social expectation. However, as cultural norms evolve, it can be challenging to determine if chivalry is still anticipated or if it has faded away.

Demonstrating good manners is always appropriate for both men and women. Ephesians 5:21 advises the church to “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” Therefore, biblical chivalry begins with humility and a readiness to prioritize others’ needs over one’s own (Romans 12:3;Philippians 2:3). While God has created men and women as equals in worth, spirit, and intellect, He has also instilled in men a natural inclination to protect and cherish the women under their care. Men and women were designed differently in roles and perspectives to complement, not compete with, each other. A man’s inherent inclination to safeguard and appreciate a woman’s beauty is manifested through acts of chivalry. By showing deference to the women around him—such as holding doors, assisting with coats, and standing when she enters—a man is honoring that God-given aspect of himself that values female beauty.

First Peter 3:7 acknowledges the inherent distinctions between men and women, advising husbands to treat their wives with respect as a “weaker vessel” and as equal heirs to the promises of Christ. We could say that husbands are called to practice chivalry towards their wives. The term “weaker vessel” does not imply inferiority, as Peter promptly follows it with the idea of spiritual equality. In this context, “weaker” is better understood as “delicate without being frail.”l,” much like an antique, highly valued Chinese vase is delicate but not fragile. When changing the oil in your car, you would not use such a vase to catch the used oil because the vase is of such high quality. You might pour the used motor oil into an old tin can, which is stronger but not of high quality.

True biblical chivalry builds upon the concept found in 1 Peter 3:7 and expresses itself in various ways by showing honor and deference to women. Chivalry is a way of demonstrating respect for God’s design, not the character of the woman in question. Many women do not conduct themselves in ways that invite chivalry, but that does not excuse rudeness on the man’s part. God’s instruction to women is that they strive for a “gentle and quiet spirit” «but let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. », (1 Peter 3:4). A woman who conducts herself with such kindness and class finds that men often respond to her with acts of chivalry.

Chivalry is a choice men should make. A godly man treats women with respect because he recognizes they are created in the image of God and therefore inherently worthy of courtesy.
