What is a jinx?

Answer

A jinx is something (or someone) believed to bring bad luck. To jinx something is to bring misfortune to it. Jinxes are often mentioned in lighthearted contexts; for instance, the “curse of the Bambino” was a jinx that supposedly affected the Red Sox after trading Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1919. Additionally, people commonly say, “Jinx!” when they unintentionally say the same word or phrase simultaneously. A person who appears to have bad luck or brings misfortune to those around them is also occasionally referred to as a jinx.

In different circumstances, a jinx can be more severe. There is a jinx associated with occult practices. Some individuals try to cast spells and place curses on others, and the Bible does not regard curses, sorcery, or other occult activities as trivial or amusing. King Balak of Moab requested Balaam to curse Israel (Numbers 23:7-8), and we understand that this curse was linked to the act of divination, not just an idle threat «Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, Neither is there any divination against Israel: According to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought! », (Numbers 23:23). God instructed Balaam not to curse Israel, implying that a curse from him would have had a spiritual impact. In the book of Acts, the apostles encountered a sorcerer named Simon who was intrigued by the miracles and signs performed by the apostles and desired to learn their secrets «Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done. », (Acts 8:13). He was known to practice magic. In the city, astonishing the people so much that they referred to him as “Great” and “the power of God” (Acts 8:9-10). The deeds Simon performed through the influence of demons were misconstrued as manifestations of God’s power. However, upon witnessing the genuine power of God, Simon desired to convert because he recognized that the apostles’ power surpassed his own. All of this, particularly God’s prohibitions against sorcery and the occult, provides support for the existence of witchcraft (Galatians 5:20;Deuteronomy 18:10-12).

It has been noted in various societies that individuals seeking to harm an adversary or control another person’s will may employ spells, curses, and jinxes to manipulate the spiritual realm for their benefit. The Bible does not offer an explanation as to why or how this occurs, or why demons would comply with human desires, unless it is to deceive them into thinking that they, the humans, are in control. Moreover, God prohibits the practice of casting spells and jinxes, which should be reason enough to steer clear.
