In informal language, a Holy Roller is a Charismatic, a Pentecostal, or another churchgoer who worships in an ecstatic, frenzied, or unrestrained manner. The concept behind the nickname is that followers of specific denominations exhibit peculiar behaviors during their worship gatherings, such as collapsing on the ground and rolling around in the aisles. The term Holy Roller has always been viewed as derogatory and is intended to be insulting.
The term Holy Roller was originally created to characterize individuals in the Charismatic sector of Christianity. Holy Rollerism represents the beliefs underpinning the ecstatic worship encounter. Nowadays, the term Holy Roller is sometimes used more broadly to describe anyone who upholds the truth of the Bible, identifies as an evangelical, or openly discusses God.
While it is accurate that certain practices within the Charismatic movement are not supported by the Bible (e.g., holy laughter, being slain in the Spirit, experiencing drunkenness in the Spirit, etc.), and there is a clear emphasis on emotionalism and personal subjective encounters in Pentecostal congregations, there is no room in the church for the use of derogatory labels. Let the non-believing world engage in name-calling—the term Christian was likely originally a form of scorn—but let the people of God refrain from such tactics.
