What does it mean that “your house is left to you desolate” (Matthew 23:38)?

Response

At the conclusion of Matthew 23, while Jesus strongly criticizes the scribes and Pharisees for their actions, He declares, “Look, your house is left to you desolate” (verse 38). Jesus made this prediction concerning the temple’s destruction in Jerusalem.

The temple being left desolate or deserted carries a dual significance. Initially, Jesus—God in human form—was leaving the temple for the final time, abandoning it of the divine Presence. God was forsaking their splendid place of worship, leaving it spiritually vacant and vulnerable to ruin. In Matthew 23:39, Jesus assures the Jews that they will not see Him again “until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’” During that period, Israel will be rescued, and the Jews will embrace faith in their true Messiah (see Romans 11:25-27).

The second interpretation of “your house is left to you desolate” pertains to the actual destruction of the temple, which would be devastated in merely forty years when the Romans attacked Jerusalem in AD 70. Shortly after Jesus’ declaration that “your house is left to you desolate,” His disciples pointed out the temple’s structures, admiring the remarkable architecture and decorations. They must have been astonished to hear Jesus describe the temple’s future condition: “These things that you see—the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another that will not be thrown down” «As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. », (Luke 21:6). Such was the sorrowful desolation awaiting Jerusalem, the temple, and the people who rejected their Messiah.

Approximately a week before Jesus’ statement that “youOur house is left to you desolate,” He had cleansed the temple. At that time, Jesus had said, “It is written, ‘My house is a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of thieves’” «saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves. », (Luke 19:46). The distinction between My house and your house is striking. The temple belonged to God, but wicked men had defiled it, necessitating Jesus’ cleansing. Then, as Jesus exited for the final time, He referred to it as “your house”—indicating that it was no longer God’s, but theirs. They had seized control of God’s house and objected to the Lord’s authority to oversee it. Consequently, God abandoned it, leaving it vulnerable to destruction.

Jesus derived no satisfaction from this sorrowful prophecy concerning the grand temple. In fact, He mourned its destruction and particularly the destiny of the people: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing” « O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! », (Matthew 23:37). Luke recounts how Jesus wept over the dreadful fate that awaited the city and its inhabitants «And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, », (Luke 19:41).

Historical accounts, including those of Josephus, provide a detailed description of the Roman invasion, confirming that Jesus’ prophecy, “your house is left to you desolate,” was fulfilled.
