What does it mean that God is our refuge and strength and an ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1)?

Response

Psalm 46:1 contains a depiction of God and a marvelous pledge based on His nature: “God is our shelter and might, a constant aid in distress.” The subsequent verse continues with what should be our instinctive reaction: “Therefore we shall not be afraid” (verse 2).

In Psalm 46, the poet portrays various types of calamities and the disorder that characterize our existence in this flawed and sinful world. He hints at natural catastrophes like earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, and floods (verses 2 and 3). He references the aspects of conflict and violence in verses 8 and 9. Nevertheless, throughout it all, “we shall not be afraid” (verse 2).

The diverse troubles the psalmist enumerates are an opportunity to recognize God’s assistance. He is our refuge, our strength, and a constant aid in troubled times. Amid the adversities of this life, we discover security and solace in God. The world is unsteady, but “the city of God”—His dwelling—is established and secure (Psalm 46:4-6). Regardless of what unfolds in this world, God will be exalted, and those who belong to Him will ultimately be secure (verses 10–11). We can “be tranquil and acknowledge” that He is God (verse 10).

The composition of Psalm 46 is exquisite. Verses 2 and 3 as well as verses 8 and 9 delineate disasters and tribulations. However, verses 1, 4–7, and 10–11 depict God’s might and security amidst those challenges. Thus, the turmoil is enclosed by God’s assurances; the verses concerning life’s challenges are vividly “encircled” by verses about the might and security of the Lord. This is a remarkable illustration. Similar to a mother or father who embraces and consoles a frightened and distressed child, God encircles us and shields us in our trials. Note that the psalmist does not assert that God will extract us from the difficulty; instead, God will safeguard us and magnify Himself amidst the difficulty.

He is our refuge. God provides safety. We find shelter in our relationship with Him (cf: Proverbs 18:10).

He is our strength. God gives us the power we need to endure hardship as we serve Him, fight spiritual battles, resist temptation, and bear up under persecution. We are weak, but He is strong. “Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”, (cf: 2 Corinthians 12:10).

He is an ever-present help in trouble. God is at hand. He is not far away from us but nearby to assist us in the tasks He has assigned (cf: Psalm 145:18).

Here are some points of application:

1. There are two groups described in Psalm 46. One group is protected by the Lord, and one group fights against the Lord. To experience God’s protection, we must belong to Him through faith in Jesus Christ. Have you been saved by God through believing in the death and resurrection of Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins and eternal life? Can you truly say, “God is my refuge”?

2. True peace will not come until we are with the Lord in “the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells” “There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.”, (Psalm 46:4). This means that, in this world, we may experience hurt, and, eventually, we will die. But in the midst of it all, God is working everything out for good (see Romans 8:28). For those who belong to God, even the bad stuff has a good end! We are eternally safe.

3. The ultimate goal is to exalt and glorify God. This is the purpose of your life. As you rest in His protection during the difficulties of this life, you are showing the goodness and power of God. Thus, no matter what happens.

Trust Him, even if circumstances do not unfold as expected, keep in mind that you are not in your final destination.

As God assures to be our shelter and source of strength, we have no reason to be afraid. Since He is always available to assist in times of trouble, individuals who are His can entrust their path to Him and find peace. God is communicating, “Stay calm. Have faith in me. I am in control.”
