The shadow of the cross

A young man who had been raised as an atheist was training to be an Olympic diver.

The only religious influence in his life came from his outspoken Christian friend. The young diver never really paid much attention to his friend’s sermons, but he heard them often.

One night the diver went to the indoor pool at the college he attended. The lights were all off, but as the pool had big skylights and the moon was bright, there was plenty of light to practice by.

The young man climbed up to the highest diving board and as he turned his back to the pool on the edge of the board and extended his arms out, he saw his shadow on the wall.

The shadow of his body in the shape of a cross. Instead of diving, he knelt down and asked God to come into his life.

As the young man stood, a maintenance man walked in and turned the lights on. The pool had been drained for repairs.

My dear friend, what do you think would have happened had this young man jumped? He almost certainly would have crashed and met his untimely death. He had missed diving to his ruin by a matter of seconds! But what happened when he opened his heart to God? The lights came on. The Master shone into his heart the Light of His grace and redemption. Jesus wants to save us all, yes.

For this reason He came and died for all humanity. Without a doubt He wants everyone to enjoy eternal bliss with Him in His glory and avoid the agony of hell; but He does not force anyone to accept Him as Lord and Saviour – as God. After all, has He not given us free will?

Do we not ultimately decide what we want to do and how we wish to live? God attempts, every second of every minute of every hour of every day – through His handiwork, through His providence, through the things He allows to happen to man – to draw him to Himself.

What man does with God’s incessant efforts at saving him determines how he ends up. As Romans 3:23 confirms, “Everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” But every day, without fail, our ever-loving God reaches out to us in the unfailing hope that we shall turn to Him – that we shall dive into the pool of His love, grace, mercy, faith, hope… life eternal. Will you not allow Him to shine His Light on your life???
