The orphan sheep

A fact not very common but has a great lesson is the one happening with the sheep that from time to time the ewe gives birth to a lamb that it rejects.

There are different reasons that are believed to be leading a ewe to reject her baby, one of them can be produced by the change in the behavior of the sheep during the Birth.

This is a very discouraging act for the shepherd, who observes the ewe’s rejection for her lamb; even many sheep keepers have witnessed how the ewe gets to kick the lamb very hard if it gets close to her and once she has rejected it, she does not change her mind.

When the young lamb is rejected by his mother, he bows his head so low that it seems that something is wrong with his neck; These animals are called “orphaned lambs.”

When this happens, the life of the orphan lamb will depend on the shepherd, who will be in charge of feeding and providing all the necessary care for the animal, otherwise it would not survive.

The shepherd does an excellent job with the abandoned lamb. He takes it home, feeds it by hand and keeps it warm by the fire; He wraps it in blankets and keeps it close to his chest so that the animal can hear his heartbeat and feel safe.

Once the lamb is strong enough, the shepherd takes it back to the field and leaves it with the rest of the flock … But after that, something great happens and is the fact that the now sheep will always remember the way the shepherd took care of it when its mother rejected it.

We can be sure that the orphan sheep knows the voice of the shepherd better than the rest of the sheep, she fully trusts him and runs into his arms safely. It does not mean that the shepherd loves the orphan sheep more than the others, it means that the orphan sheep knows and loves more the shepherd because she has experienced that love face to face and knows how deep it is.

Many of us are like that orphan sheep, we walk through life broken and abandoned; Jesus is that shepherd who loves and cares for us. Once life or people have cast us off, he cares for us, feeds us, and keeps us close to his heart; we may be broken, but the pastor’s love rebuilds every area within us.

”Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me,” Psalms 27:10.
