An Open Door to Your Mind

Edwin C. Barnes had a strong, specific desire to worth with Thomas Edison. He did not want to work for Mr. Edison; he wanted to work with Mr. Edison.

Two big obstacles stood in his way. He did not know Thomas Edison and he did not have enough money to get to Orange, New Jersey. What Edwin did have, however, was a strong desire and determination.

Edwin C. Barnes did not let these obstacles to stop him. Instead of taking an expensive passenger train, Edwin took a freight train to Orange. He then proceeded to present himself at Thomas Edison’s laboratory and announced that he had come to go into business with the inventor. Mr. Edison speaking about that first meeting remembered the expression on Edwin’s face conveyed the desire and determination and gave him the opportunity he asked for. Of course, Edwin did not start out as a partner of Thomas Edison, but eventually, Edwin saw an opportunity with a new invention, a dictating machine.

No one but Edison and Barnes was interested in the machine. Barnes knew that he could sell the Edison Dictating Machine. He suggested this to the inventor and promptly got his chance. He did such a great job that Edison gave him a contract to distribute and market it all over the nation. Out of this business association grew the slogan, “Made by Edison and installed by Barnes.” Thus, a ‘partnership’ with Thomas Edison and Edwin C. Barnes was born and I have a new role model!

Do you have a dream or a goal to achieve?

You can be sure that you will achieve it as long as you help others to achieve their own goals. The help you offer to a member of your family, a neighbor, a coworker or your boss will come back to you as success.

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:10
