If God knows my needs, why should I pray?

We know that God knows everything: the past, present and future. He also knows our most hidden thoughts and desires.

If God knows my needs, why should I pray?

Psalm 139:4 says, “Lord, you know what I will say even before the words come out of my mouth.” So, what is the purpose of prayer? If God already knows our needs and knows what we will ask of Him, why do we have to tell Him?

God is the God of the impossible, but He also expects us to do our part and pray. Prayer, like everything else in the Christian life, is for the glory of God and for our benefit, in that order. Everything that God does, everything that God allows and commands is, in every sense, for his glory.

It is also true that while God seeks his own glory entirely, man benefits when God is glorified. We pray to glorify God, but we also pray to receive the benefits of prayer from His hand.

Prayer is for our benefit, even knowing the fact that God knows the end from the beginning. It is our privilege to bring our whole finite existence into the glory of His infinite presence.

Prayer opens the door to the treasures of the Kingdom of God. It is a key that the Creator has placed in our hands and invites us to use it.

Prayer is the channel through which God’s provision flows to us

One of the most frequent questions people ask about prayer is: “If God knows all my needs, then why do I have to ask Him to supply them?”

The Lord teaches us in Matthew 6, not to worry about what we need because the Father knows everything we need even before we ask Him (Matthew 6:8). In spite of this, He tells us that we should ask even for our food: “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11).

Don’t you find it curious? Jesus assures us that he is aware of what we need, but tells us that we should ask him in prayer. God has established through it the divine formula to release his blessings upon his children.

For him it would be very simple to give us what we need; everything belongs to him and the universe is at his command. It would be very easy to give us everything we need without having to wait for us to ask him. But this is not how he has structured it.

God loves us, and his greatest desire is to be intimate with us. Prayer is much more than a bunch of words sandwiched between “My God” and “Amen.” Prayer is the spiritual gateway to coming into his presence and experiencing the love he has planned to have with you and me.

This teaches us that although He knows everything, He also wants to know it from our mouth. Prayer is not just an act of asking and demanding things from God, it also helps us to

  • Put our thoughts in order.
  • Examine our true intentions.
  • Reflect on our actions.

In addition, prayer allows our relationship with God to grow. It is a way to strengthen the bond we have with Him. We speak to Him through prayer, He listens to us and responds through His Word.
