How should Christians view weapons of mass destruction?

Answer

Today’s weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) have the capability of causing millions of deaths in a matter of seconds. Does the Bible address how we should perceive these weapons?

Although the technology is new, the ultimate outcome of warfare remains unchanged. The intention behind using such weapons is to cause widespread death, a topic frequently addressed in Scripture. Death in the context of war is a common theme, particularly in the Old Testament. While peace was often sought after, death in warfare was a harsh reality for many throughout biblical history. The Bible vividly portrays the atrocities of war, including instances of genocide (Joshua 6:17-21;1 Samuel 15:2-3).

During the tribulation period, the four horsemen of the apocalypse will emerge to conquer, bring about poverty, and cause death (Revelation 6:1-8). War not only brings conflict and hostility but also results in economic collapse, disease, and widespread death.

In a world tainted by sin, hatred, and evil (Romans 3:10-18), war becomes inevitable. In our modern, technologically advanced world, warfare includes the looming threat of WMDs. As Christians, we should not seek out war “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”, (Matthew 5:9). However, we must acknowledge that God has granted authority to governments to uphold justice through “the sword” (Romans 13:1;cf: 1 Peter 2:13). Governments also carry the divine responsibility to safeguard their citizens. Someti

God’s administration of justice and protection against aggression includes the production and utilization of weapons of mass destruction.

Secondly, believers are instructed to seek peace. Psalm 34:14 advises, “Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” Possessing ample weaponry is crucial for upholding peace. During a peaceful period, King Solomon maintained 1,400 chariots, 12,000 war horses, and infantry «And Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, whom he bestowed in the cities for chariots, and with the king at Jerusalem. », (1 Kings 10:26). While striving for peace, we also acknowledge the concept of peace through strength; the possession of weapons of mass destruction—when in responsible hands—can deter war.

Thirdly, believers need not fear weapons of mass destruction. In describing Christ’s gathering of believers, Paul concludes, “Encourage one another with these words” «In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. », (1 Thessalonians 5:18). We anticipate eternity with the Lord and do not live in dread of the world’s weapons.

Fourthly, in democratic societies, believers can advocate for good causes. Proverbs 31:8–9 states, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” To the best of our ability, we can assist in alleviating the casualties of war and supporting those impacted by the use of weapons of mass destruction.

Fifthly, prayer surpasses any weapon of mass destruction in power. Ultimately, God controls humanity’s capacity to employ weapons of mass destruction. Our prayers serve as a means to seek peace and comfort in turbulent times.

In powerful ways to change the course of history, refer to James 5:16. “Some trust in chariots and some in horses [and some in WMDs], but we trust in the name of the LORD our God” «Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: But we will remember the name of the LORD our God. », (Psalm 20:7).
