How should a Christian respond to a bad economy?

Answer

When faced with a challenging economy that jeopardizes job security and savings, it is natural to feel apprehensive and somewhat insecure. However, a Christian can find peace during economic downturns. Here are three effective ways for Christians to react when the economy is unfavorable:

Continue to exercise wisdom.

The Bible contains valuable principles regarding finances and work. Laziness is never beneficial; it is known that a lazy person who avoids work will have nothing when it is time to reap the rewards (Proverbs 13:4; Proverbs 20:4). Diligence leads to prosperity, as stated, “The lazy do not roast any game, but the diligent feed on the riches of the hunt” (Proverbs 12:27). Excessive wealth can bring its own set of problems, “A person’s riches may ransom their life, but the poor cannot respond to threatening rebukes” (Proverbs 13:8). Acquiring wealth gradually over time is wiser than obtaining a large sum all at once, “Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow” (Proverbs 13:11). However, endlessly toiling for wealth is not the behavior of a wise person, “Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness” (Proverbs 23:4). These principles, along with many others found in the Scriptures, are proven and applicable in both tough and prosperous economic times.

Remember God’s economy.

Certain principles remain constant, regardless of one’s economic situation.

Our situation can be challenging. Being generously cheerful will lead to a bountiful harvest—although the gathering may need to wait until the world to come (2 Corinthians 9:6-7). Giving to the needy brings a reward “that your alms may be in secret: and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”, (Matthew 6:4). God never guarantees that we will be wealthy in this world, or even that we will always have as much as we desire, but He does pledge to meet our needs, while also providing joy, peace, and spiritual productivity to those who have His Spirit (Galatians 5:20-21;John 7:38). By prioritizing the kingdom of God, all essential things will be given to us “But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”, (Matthew 6:33). Our focus should always be spiritual. Christians are likened to soldiers in a war; soldiers do not engage in civilian pursuits while in combat (2 Timothy 2:3-4). A poor economy should not overly concern a soldier, as their attention is on other matters. This is the mindset a Christian should adopt regarding financial matters. Certainly, we are to manage money wisely and be generous, but it is unwise to place trust in money or anything else in this world that is so easily perishable and lost (Matthew 6:19-21).

Trust in God’s provision.

When savings start to diminish due to an economic downturn, we may be tempted to fear, wondering how we will be provided for in the future. However, God

God has promised to provide for us, regardless of the economic situation we may be facing. He provided food for Elijah through ravens (1 Kings 17:4-6). He ensured that the widow’s supply of oil and flour did not run out (verse 16). God also looks after the sparrows, ensuring they are fed; He will not neglect to provide for His children (Matthew 6:25-27).
