Answer
Age is a numerical representation of a duration from start to finish. To determine age, there must be a beginning point. Humans calculate age starting from their birth dates. When a baby is born, the counting begins. We say, “It has been seven days since he was born, so he is one week old.” Two months old. Four years old. A person’s lifespan always commences on their date of birth.
God did not have a beginning; hence, we cannot attribute an age to Him. He exists beyond time, making the question “how old is God?” irrelevant. God established time within this universe to mark the passage of seasons and years for us (Genesis 1:14;Psalm 104:19). However, He is not bound by time. In the New Testament, He refers to Himself as “the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end” (Revelation 1:8,11;22:13). Alpha represents the first letter of the Greek alphabet, and omega the last. In the Old Testament, the Lord identifies Himself as “the first and the last” «Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. », (Isaiah 44:6). God conveys that He is eternally present. There is no past or future with God. Everything seems to be happening in the present moment. This concept is challenging for us to grasp as we are constrained by time.
When God revealed His identity to Moses for the first time, He declared His name as “I AM WHO I AM” «And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. », (Colossians 1:16;John 1:1-3). Before Abraham was born, Jesus declared, “I am” «Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. », (John 8:58).
In essence, God does not possess an age. He is timeless. He is eternal «And Abraham planted a grove in Beer-sheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God. », (Genesis 21:33). He sustains the universe, and without Him, nothing would exist «All things were made by him; and without him was not
Anything that was created was made by Him. », (John 1:3). If God had an age, that would imply He had a beginning and there was a time when there was no God, which is impossible. Because God has always existed, we can trust that He will always exist, and the future is secure for those who place their trust in Him (Psalm 9:10; Proverbs 30:5).
